I was just wondering if Audi's 'quattro' 4-wheel drive system was any different than any other AWD systems on other cars? Or was 'quattro' just their trim name for their car being AWD?
Thank You.Is Audi's quattro system any different than any other AWD?Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive is slightly different from normal AWD systems such as that in Subarus or the Mitsubishi Evolution. It has what's called a "rear-bias" all-wheel-drive system. Essentially while it does send all the power through all the wheels, it sends no more than a third of the power through the front wheels. So while you can still hang the tail out of the corners, it's easily manageable so you don't lose control and spin out. Jeremy Clarkson's review of the Audi R8 is a good case in point. Is Audi's quattro system any different than any other AWD?Yes. First remember that audi was the brand that brought awd to the forefront. Most awd systems nowadays rely on sophisticated electronics and pneumatics (viscous coupling) to distribute torque. Audi has been using the same all mechanical Torsen differential system from the beginning and has perfected it over the years. Explaining it hear would be too lengthy, if you really want to know how awd works, and the different types, click the link below. Bottom line is, when it comes to driving through bad weather, the quattro awd system is still the most simple and effective of them all.
