What gear should I use in the snow with a 1997 Audi A4 1.8 quattro automatic?

Ok, I know this sounds odd, but I just bought this car and it didn't come with an owner's manual and I have no idea about an all-wheel drive. What gear should be used in the snow? going up the mountain? Thanks from a girl who knows nothing about cars. What gear should I use in the snow with a 1997 Audi A4 1.8 quattro automatic?i would drop it down into a low gear..get as much torque goin as possibleWhat gear should I use in the snow with a 1997 Audi A4 1.8 quattro automatic?Karen, you have to feel your car.

The Audi Quattro is a great snow car, make sure you have proper winter tires on to avoid any sliding.

If there is a lot of snow around, downshift to a lower gear, put your transmission on 1.

When you hear your engine roaring, go up to 2. In any case, you can use your RPM to know when to shift, usually you should shift after reaching 4 on your RPM.

But definitely stay in a lower gear when it's snowing or going up a mountain, don't just leave it on drive. What gear should I use in the snow with a 1997 Audi A4 1.8 quattro automatic? Here's another trick for stopping on slick or icy surfaces. Put the car in neutral. An automatic transmission is always providing some power to the wheels. On a flat surface, put the car in gear and take your foot off the brake and it'll start moving forward. This works against you when trying to stop on slick surfaces so putting the car in neutral allows your brakes to control the wheel/tire without any conflicting action from the powertrain of the car. On a snowy day practice in an empty parking lot to get a feel for your car on slippery surfaces, the brakes and shifting the auto transmission. Make sure that empty parking lot does not have parking curbs or blocks. Last thing, do not pump your brakes. You will confuse your ABS. Always use steady firm pressure and let the ABS work for you.
